Polish that helps at work – INTEURO Profession language courses are under way

More confident conversations with employers and colleagues, better understanding of workplace instructions and greater independence in everyday situations – Polish language courses for foreigners are under way as part of the INTEURO Profession project. Language learning is intended to support participants both in entering the Polish labour market and in their further professional development.

Polish language courses for foreigners are under way as part of the INTEURO Profession project. This time, language learning is closely linked to one of the project’s main objectives – helping participants function more effectively in the Polish labour market. Polish is intended to support them not only in everyday life, but also when looking for employment, communicating with employers and colleagues, and carrying out professional duties.

The project provides for two courses of 30 teaching hours each for a total of 40 participants. The level of the classes is adapted to participants’ language skills – from A1 to C1. This means that support is available both to people who are just beginning to learn Polish and to foreigners who need more advanced language skills for work and further professional development.

The classes cover everyday communication as well as language needed in the workplace and elements of sector-specific vocabulary tailored to participants’ needs. An important part of the programme is preparation for independent communication at work and for handling matters that foreigners encounter while living and working in Poland.

Knowing Polish helps, among other things, with:

• communicating with employers and colleagues,

• understanding instructions, guidelines and workplace rules,

• looking for a job and taking part in recruitment processes,

• independently handling administrative and employment-related matters,

• developing skills needed for further career development.

For some participants, improving their Polish may be an important step towards their first job in Poland. For others, it may make it possible to use their existing qualifications and experience more fully – by taking on more demanding responsibilities, moving to a different position or continuing their professional development. A language barrier can prevent people with valuable skills from making full use of them in the workplace.

This is why learning Polish in the INTEURO Profession project is not treated as an activity separate from other forms of support. The courses are part of a broader pathway of professional and social activation, combining language development with counselling, training, vocational workshops and other activities designed to help participants find their place in the Polish labour market.

In line with the project objectives, the courses develop skills needed in both social and professional life. Their purpose is to increase participants’ independence, improve their ability to function in the workplace and increase their chances of employment.

Participants also receive materials for learning Polish as a foreign language. The course ends with a test and a certificate of completion. Classes are taught by Polish language instructors, while the project’s language activities are carried out in cooperation with the Centre for Polish Culture and Language at Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce.

The Polish language courses are one of the activities carried out as part of the public task “INTEURO Profession – a programme for the professional and social activation of foreigners”. The project is intended to help foreigners develop the skills needed to enter the labour market, function effectively in employment and continue their professional and social development.

The project is implemented by the Integration Europe – East Association in partnership with the University of the National Education Commission in Krakow – Institute of Law, Economics and Administration, the LEX Generalis Foundation, the Hope for the Family Association and MassInternet.

Participation in the project is free of charge. Information about current and upcoming forms of support is published on the project website.
